Eliza’s Blog
Chrissy’s already let the world know, but Eliza is now blogging! We’ve done it as one means of helping her learn to read and write. She loves getting responses from folks, though generally doesn’t have the vocabularly to read all the words by herself. OK, so that means a little bit of parental involvement–no problem here!
I’ve been to Eliza’s school a couple of times and her teacher has encouraged us to do whatever we can to expose her to words. Eliza loves to read, but she also gets frustrated with herself for not knowing something. It’s been really hard to find the right words to correct her spelling. She’ll spell things right phonetically, but then it wont be spelled correctly for the rest of us.
I’ve got to tell her that she did a good job except for that one word there.
Something else I’ve been doing since DVD players came out was turning ON the subtitles. I did this for several reasons:
- Small children like to make noise and I don’t want to miss the dialogue.
- They can easily see that words can be printed as well as spoken
- It was a new feature and worth testing
Now, years later we’re finally at the stage where Eliza can somewhat read along with what people are saying. It’s exposing her to new words, when she wants to look at them. I was surprised she was actually learning words from one of her Barbie movies the other day. I finally felt justif
ied as a parent! WhoHoo!
We’ll see how she does on this blogging thing. We’ve been using ours like journals and this might be a good way for her to keep her family history… We’ll have to kick her off ‘roeckerfam.com’ when she gets married though. I’ll buy her her own .com for a wedding present.
If this looking to the future sounds a bit shocking, we’ve been telling Eliza for years now that we only had her so we can be grandparents. Anyone who knows me well can picture the precise half-joking tone I use to tell her such things. It should come as no shock. Hopefully the half-joking tone doesn’t scar her for life.
